Coaching for Expats & Digital Nomads

“Home is not where you are born; home is where all your attempts to escape cease” - Naguib Mahfouz

Following the steady rise of overseas working opportunities in line with globalisation over the last decades, as well as the recent dramatic increase in digital nomadism as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, a growing number of individuals now spend at least a portion of their careers living and working abroad – whether as a result of voluntary choices or external life circumstances (such as a partner’s job move). However, there is relatively limited discussion or understanding around the emotions and personal challenges that expatriation, repatriation or nomadism can prompt, as well as how living and working abroad can shape who one becomes as an individual.

Following my research into psychology related to expatriation, my coaching work in this area includes helping individuals to:

  • Work through decisions regarding moving overseas, repatriating or adopting a nomadic lifestyle;

  • Acknowledge, understand and address emotions and challenges that are frequently experienced due to expatriation, repatriation or nomadism;

  • Understand and manage difficulties in working relationships overseas as a result of cultural differences;

  • Identify and understand nomadic patterns, to ensure that these do not hinder them professionally or personally; and

  • Gain increased awareness and appreciation of the role that an overseas experience can play within one’s life narrative and personal development.
